Quickly Refine Searches

Summon Refine Search Options

  • narrow by content type to find only articles, books or WPI project reports
  • filter by library location to find items in the Film Collection or Archives
  • screen for only full text or peer reviewed articles
  • exclude newspaper articles - for some topics, you will find it handy to remove all the news articles that may come up in your results.

When you select "Add results beyond your library's collection" you will find articles and other resources that WPI may not own. Use the FullTextFinder to see options for obtaining the item(s) within Google Scholar or through Interlibrary Loan.

Peer Reviewed or Refeered

What are "peer reviewed or "refereed" journals?

A peer reviewed journal is a special type of publication. Before articles are published within these types of journals, they are sent by the editors of the journal to other scholars in the field ("peers"), often anonymously, to get feedback on the quality of the scholarship, review research methods, as well as relevance or importance to the field. The article may be accepted, often with revisions suggested, or rejected for publication.

Considered the most respected, researchers wish to have their works published in them. Many often have low acceptance rates.

To find peer reviewed articles within Summon, notice the option to Limit to articles from peer-reviewed publication.

Should I Use a Specialized Database instead?

Undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff and professional researchers will find Summon to be a valuable first place to look for articles, books and other research.

Some researchers will want to delve deeper into the research using databases for their subject area, especially for Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. You can also schedule a meeting with a librarian for one-on-one research assistance.
