Student Assistant Guide

Maintaining your section

Instructions for your stack hour

Update in progress, find your stack hours spreadsheet here

Stack hour instructions:

1.      Check if there are any books that need to be pulled, pull any slips in the bin

2.      Check to see if there are books to shelve. You may need to put together a cart yourself.

3.      Shelve a cart – this may take the duration of your shift if there is a lot of shelving to do.

4.      Clear the floors; clearing the floors means checking for books on every book cart on every floor and searching for books that are clearly in the wrong place (tables, floor, shoved on top of rows of books, etc.)

5.      Bring all books found when clearing the floors back down to the front desk to be scanned into ALMA, then move them to the shelving area.

6.      If none of the above needs to be done, go to your designated section in the stacks to shelf read and neaten up your section. When doing this, you may:

a.      Start from the beginning of the section and scan it for out of place books (if it is very out of place it needs to be checked in at the front desk).

b.      Make sure the books are upright and 1 inch from the edge of the shelf, book ends should be placed on shelves missing them.

c.       Dust the books and shelves, supplies found in the cabinet behind Sam’s desk.
