How can you tell if the author of a book is a historian?

Try searching for the author name on Google. For example, a quick search on Google reveals that the author of Cholera: A Biography, Christopher Hamlin, is a Professor of History at University of Notre Dame and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
