This collection of videos is curated by Professor Ingrid Matos-Nin, faculty in the department of Humanities and Arts at WPI. For questions or comments, contact Professor Ingrid Matos-Nin at imatos@wpi.edu. Professor Matos-Nin's statement on the purpose of this collection follows:
75 Pioneering Women: A Video Collection of Historical LGBTQ Icons was made with our students in mind. We want them to familiarize themselves with women who left and are still leaving a positive legacy in our society and the world. These are women that come from around the world and from all walks of life.
We included women who are politicians, public administrators, painters, writers, religious leaders, cartoonists, athletes, transgender icons that risked and gave their life for the advancement of LGBTQ rights, poets, philosophers, sociologists, TV producers, film directors, queens, anthropologists, ethnographers, musicians, nuns, dramaturgs, teachers, photographers, singers, environmentalists, journalists, spies, visual artists, senators, diplomats, social workers, medical doctors, ophthalmologists, worker’s rights advocates, saints, public health officials, a presidential cabinet secretary, diarists, HIV/AIDS advocates, and women suffrage leaders.
We’d like our students to learn by example and possibly follow in their footsteps and improve on these women’s deeds in the future. This collection can also serve as a resource for professors in their courses. Departments like Humanities and Arts (with all its divisions), Business, and Social Sciences can benefit from this database.
