Voting Resources: Vote

This guide provides important non-partisan voter registration information

How to Vote

Check-In:
  • Find the Right Line: When you arrive at your polling place, make sure to join the correct line, as some locations serve multiple precincts.
  • Provide Information: Once at the check-in table, give the poll worker your name and address to verify your registration.
  • Choose Your Ballot: If you are an unenrolled voter (independent) or belong to a political designation and are voting in a primary, you must select one party's ballot.
  • Confirmation: The poll worker will repeat your name, address, and party choice back to you before marking it on the voter list.
  • Identification: Be prepared to show identification if required. This may apply if you registered by mail and it's your first time voting, if you're an inactive voter, or if you're casting a challenged or provisional ballot.
Mark Ballot:
  • Receive Your Ballot: After check-in, the poll worker will provide your ballot. If it will be processed by an electronic tabulator, you’ll receive a secrecy sleeve to cover your ballot after voting.
  • Voting Booth: Enter the voting booth and mark your ballot according to the instructions at the top. You can fill in ovals, connect arrows, or mark an “X” next to your choice.
  • Assistance Options: If you need help due to a disability or language barrier, you can bring someone with you into the booth or request assistance from two poll workers from different political parties.
  • AutoMARK Terminal: For independent marking, use the AutoMARK Voter Assist Terminal available at every polling place, which reads and marks your choices.
Check-Out:
  • Final Confirmation: After marking your ballot, proceed to a check-out table where you'll again provide your name and address. If voting in a primary as an unenrolled voter, inform the poll worker of your chosen ballot.
  • Verification: The poll worker will repeat this information back to ensure accuracy before updating the voter list.
Cast Your Ballot:
  • Submitting Your Vote: After check-out, head to the ballot box. Most cities and towns use optical scan machines; insert your ballot into the machine for tallying.
  • Hand Count Procedures: If your location counts ballots by hand, fold your ballot in half and place it in the designated ballot box.
