While Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world, notching up more than 32 million views a day, less than 18.2% of its English-language biographies are about women. This number has increased by 2.7% in the past five years largely due to Wikipedia edit-a-thons – events in which participants work together to create and edit Wikipedia pages for notable women. These efforts increase the number of women role models and help to combat systemic gender biases by making the achievements of women leaders more readily discoverable to the world.
On Wednesday, March 31st from 5PM to 7PM ET, a virtual Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to improve and create pages for women and other marginalized and/or underrepresented identities who have been leading the way in STEM fields and advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion at WPI throughout its history was held. Training - facilitated by Francesca Bernardi, Assistant Professor, WPI Department of Mathematical Sciences - was provided.

The event was sponsored by the George C. Gordon Library.
