APA: In-Text Citations

In-text citations are included in the body of the work when you quote, paraphrase, or otherwise refer to a source.

Author, Date Citations
In-text citations should include the name of the author and the year of publication. You can choose between a parenthetical citation and a narrative citation.
  • In a parenthetical citation, the author and year are both written in parentheses after the cited information. Example:
    • With webcams and remotely operated cat toys, the Bideawee shelter in New York City gave cat lovers the chance to play with cats without having to visit the shelter (Grossman, 2011).

  • In a narrative citation, the name of the author is included in the text of the sentence, and the year is written in parentheses after the author’s name. Example:
    • Grossman (2011) described how the Bideawee shelter in New York City used webcams and remotely operated toys to give cat lovers the chance to play with cats without having to visit the shelter.

Page Numbers

Include page numbers whenever you quote a source. Page numbers are not required for paraphrase citations, but you may want to include page numbers when citing a long work. Page numbers help direct readers quickly to the relevant information. Examples:

  • When selecting a cat at an animal shelter, adopters prefer active cats (Fantuzzi et al., 2010, p. 179).

  • Fantuzzi et al. (2010) found that when selecting a cat at an animal shelter, adopters prefer active cats (p. 179).

  • Free-ranging cats “should rarely be malnourished if adequate numbers of prey are available” (Spotte, 2014, p. 137).

  • According to Spotte (2014), free-ranging cats “should rarely be malnourished if adequate numbers of prey are available” (p. 137).

Number of Authors

The format of the in-text citation will change depending on the number of authors the source has. For one author, list the last name of the author and the year of publication. For two authors, list the last names of both authors and the year of publication. For three or more authors, list the last name of the first author followed by the phrase “et al.” which is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase “et alia,” which means “and others.”
