Faith and Spirituality: Christian

Welcome to the Faith and Spirituality LibGuide! This guide highlights resources and information about religion and spirituality reflected currently on campus

Christianity

Christianity, major religion stemming from the life, teachings, and death of Jesus of Nazareth (the Christ, or the Anointed One of God) in the 1st century CE. It has become the largest of the world’s religions and, geographically, the most widely diffused of all faiths. It has a constituency of more than two billion believers. Its largest groups are the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox churches, and the Protestant churches. The Oriental Orthodox churches constitute one of the oldest branches of the tradition but had been out of contact with Western Christianity and Eastern Orthodoxy from the middle of the 5th century until the late 20th century because of a dispute over Christology (the doctrine of Jesus Christ’s nature and significance).

At its most basic, Christianity is the faith tradition that focuses on the figure of Jesus Christ. In this context, faith refers both to the believers’ act of trust and to the content of their faith. As a tradition, Christianity is more than a system of religious belief. It also has generated a culture, a set of ideas and ways of life, practices, and artifacts that have been handed down from generation to generation since Jesus first became the object of faith. Christianity is thus both a living tradition of faith and the culture that the faith leaves behind. The agent of Christianity is the church, the community of people who make up the body of believers.

Christian Bible Fellowship at WPI

The Christian Bible Fellowship (CBF) serves as a non-denominational community of believers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) who live, study, and grow together spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. They strive to worship God and build Christ-centered Christian community through weekly Bible studies, Friday Night Fellowships, rides to local churches, bi-annual retreats, outreach events, worship nights, prayer night, and other fun events.

Christian Bible Fellowship Constitution

The first part of the Christian Bible Fellowship constitution includes a statement of our faith:

  • The belief in the scripture of the Old and New Testaments as inspired by God, their entire trustworthiness, and their supreme and final authority in faith and life.
  • The belief in one God, eternally existing in three persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • The belief in the ultimate literal fulfillment of every prophecy in scripture.
  • The belief in accordance to the Genesis account, that man was created in the image and likeness of God, that man sinned and thereby incurred physical and spiritual death which is separation from God.
  • The belief that Jesus Christ is true God and true man. That He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of Mary, a virgin.
  • The belief that Jesus Christ is the propitiation for our sins by His substitutionary sacrifice on the cross.
  • The belief in the bodily resurrection of the crucified Lord Jesus as supported by scripture and historical evidence.
  • The belief that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is accomplished by the grace of God alone, through faith.
  • The expectation of the personal return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
