APCs (Article Processing Charges for OA) at WPI: ACS

ACS (American Chemical Society)

ACS Publications

American Chemical Society (ACS) TA/Read & Publish Agreement (2025-2027)

Overview

WPI faculty, staff, and students who are corresponding authors on articles published in all ACS (American Chemical Society) hybrid journals and select other publications are able to make these available open access without any payment.  See the table on the ACS information page which shows the ACS journals where your article publishing charge (APC) should be covered.

Authors will be clearly notified on screen in the ACS submission system that they are eligible for the Read & Publish agreement and that they can publish OA with no APC to pay. To be eligible, the author must be the corresponding author assigned in the ACS submission system and must use the WPI institutional email address to submit their article.

In addition to open access publication benefits, WPI continues to offer full-text access to all current ACS Publications journal content.

Authors who elect to publish open access will automatically have their final published article sent for deposit in PubMed Central. Please note all content accepted for US PubMed Central is automatically mirrored on Europe PMC — nothing more is required on your part. Authors publishing open access under this agreement are also free to deposit their accepted manuscript in our institutional (Digital WPI) and/or research funder’s designated open access repository.

Full details on WPI's ACS Read & Publish agreement are available at:  https://acsopenscience.org/customers/worcester-polytechnic-institute/

Eligibility

  • WPI corresponding authors can publish as OA articles for free in all ACS hybrid journals and some additional journals including ACS Omega, ACS Au family (including JACS Au) and more
  • Double-check that the WPI author is listed as the corresponding author, both in the ACS online submission system and in the manuscript
  • Use your official WPI institutional email address to submit your manuscript.
  • State your WPI institute affiliation and email address in your manuscript and make sure this remains the same, even after submission
  • WPI has 25 APC 'tokens' per calendar year. If (and this is highly unlikely) the tokens are all utilized, additional submissions would not receive the APC waiver. The corresponding author would be notified in this situation BEFORE ACS continues the process to verify whether or not to proceed

License Used

  • CC BY  open access license
  • Authors can decide to opt-out of open access (OA) and sign a standard (non-OA) licence instead. If an author opts-out of using the agreement, ACS reaches out to the author to inform the author of the agreement and offer them the opportunity to update their Journal Publishing Agreement.

Submission Process

Submission Process

How to publish open access under your WPI's ACS read and publish agreement

  1. Ensure that you are the submitting corresponding author for your article, and that your affiliation is correct in the ACS Publishing Center when you submit.
  2. After the peer review process is complete, you will receive an email prompting you to sign the Journal Publishing Agreement (JPA).
  3. The JPA will show that you have access to a read and publish agreement. Simply answer “Yes, I wish to publish open access as per the agreement”.
  4. Complete the rest of the JPA process. Your open access funding request will be sent to your agreement administrator for review and approval – no further action will be required from you.
  5. Your completed manuscript will automatically be submitted to PubMed Central / EuropePMC. When publishing under this agreement, you can also archive the accepted manuscript in your institutional or research funder’s repository if you wish.  Please contact support@services.acs.org for further assistance, or if you have any questions.
